The basic purpose of the amplifier in a car audio system is to amplify the sound coming from the pre-amplifier before feeding it to the speakers. Since most installed car audio system amplifiers have relatively low power, it is common practice among car audio enthusiasts to install an aftermarket amplifier. Although many people think the main reason for getting a higher power amplifier is simply to make the car’s audio system louder (and it will do that), an amplifier also improves sound quality at all volume levels.

In addition to boosting sound, amplifiers may have a number of other features that can make an audio system perform more efficiently. Built-in crossovers, for example, direct sound frequencies to the portions of the speaker system designed to handle them.

For example, many people purchase sub-woofers for their car audio systems to boost bass sounds. Bass sounds are produced by low frequency signals; a crossover directs high-frequency signals away from the sub-woofer. By the same token, the speaker system’s tweeters are designed to handle high-frequency signals, so the crossover directs the low-frequency signals away from them. Another feature of some car amplifiers is bridging, which allows the amplifier to direct its power to a selected channel.

When assessing the element of an amplifier that many consumers are most fascinated by (its power), it is good to be aware that the peak power rating refers only to the amount of power available in short bursts.
