Car Subwoofers

Groundshaking bass, that’s what subwoofers are all about. It’s not just the volume that creates the thumping vibration so familiar to anyone who lives near a teenager or a hard-core car audio fan, it’s the types of sounds subwoofers are designed to handle. Subwoofers pick up the very low-frequency sounds (100 Hz or less) that ordinary bass speakers can’t handle.

Although small subwoofers are available, most are larger than ordinary speakers, eight inches or more, and typically require considerable amplifier power to perform correctly. Subwoofers are not included in most factory-installed car audio systems, so they are often purchased as aftermarket components. Subwoofer enclosures are also sold, which help subwoofers reproduce low-frequency bass sounds better.

When buying subwoofers for your car audio system, there are a couple of basic considerations to keep in mind. One is figuring out where you’ll put them. The sound emanating from subwoofers is omnidirectional so you don’t need to be concerned about speaker placement for that reason, but a 12-inch subwoofer does take up a lot of space, and you’ll need to figure that into your purchase decision.

A second consideration is power. Most manufacturers will list a subwoofer’s maximum power, which will typically only be available for brief bursts of sound. If you want sustained power, you’ll need to look at the RMS power. This refers to the amount of power (wattage) the subwoofer can handle for long periods without distortion or failure.
