Top MP3 Players

You’ve probably heard of the iPod by now, but you don’t have to buy one of these Apple devices to get a top-quality MP3 player. Top brands like Sony have gotten into the market in a big way.

MP3 players come in several types. They may be CD players as well, although this tends to make them bulkier than other types. Some MP3 players use what is called flash-based memory, while some use an internal hard drive to store digital audio files.

Flash-based MP3 players have less memory at their disposal but are also less vulnerable to data loss due to rough handling than hard-drive-based MP3 players. Hard-drive-based MP3 players store music on an internal hard drive ranging in size from less than a gigabyte to more than 50 gigabytes. The more memory, of course, the more music can be stored.

Top MP3 players from brands like Sony offer features like 20 GB of hard drive memory and rechargeable lithium batteries for up to 30 hours of continuous playback time. It’ll cost you, though, for even at discounted prices many of these players sell at several hundred dollars a pop. In contrast, a budget hard drive MP3 player with far less storage and standard batteries may be closer to $100.

If you want extra features in an MP3 player, look for things like additional file format support (e.g., the player will play WMA, WAV, or other types of music files) and an FM tuner. Many top-of-the-line MP3 players will have these features, as well as better sound quality and longer battery life. You can check out a wide variety of MP3 players at a consumer electronics wholesaler.
