The term wholesale electronics has traditionally referred to electronics goods held in large quantities by distributors for resale to retailers, other wholesalers, or sometimes directly to consumers. The prices for wholesale electronics are typically substantially lower than the prices for retail goods. There are two reasons for this.

The first reason has to do with bulk discounts. Distributors typically buy in quantities that allow for a very low per-unit cost. The second and perhaps more important reason for lower prices has to do with the absence of a middleman.

When a consumer buys electronics from a retailer, the retailer marks up the price over and above what was paid to the wholesaler or distributor. That markup is the basis for a retailer’s profit. The retailer functions as a middleman between the consumer and the wholesaler. Cutting out the retailer and buying wholesale electronics directly from a distributor means cutting out the retailer’s markup on price, and getting the goods for a lower cost.

The explosion of e-commerce has had an effect on the market for wholesale electronics by encouraging something known as drop shipping. Rather than purchasing and holding wholesale goods in inventory, internet sellers may market products to consumers and conduct the financial portions of transactions, but arrange to have the goods shipped by wholesalers directly to buyers. Making arrangements for drop shipping cuts the internet reseller’s cost of doing business considerably.
